    What Is Special?

Founded in 1857, Illinois State University was the first public university in the state and is one of the Midwest’s oldest institutions of higher education. It is a coeducational, residential university whose emphasis is on undergraduate study. Its 34 academic departments in six colleges offer 67 undergraduate programs in more than 188 fields of study. The Graduate School coordinates 42 master’s, eight specialist, and eight doctoral programs.

Illinois State is distinguished as the only public university in Illinois to be classified as a National Doctoral Research-Intensive University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It will continue to be the first-choice public university in Illinois for high-achieving, motivated students who seek an individualized educational experience combined with the resources of a large university. As an institution, our vision and values are Individualized Attention, Public Opportunity, Active Pursuit of Learning and Scholarship, Diversity, and Innovation.

The 970-acre campus of Illinois State University with 61 major buildings is located in the twin cities of Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. The campus is just 210 km from Chicago, Illinois, 265 km from St. Louis, Missouri, and 116 km from Springfield, Illinois – the home of Abraham Lincoln. Bloomington/Normal is a safe and accessible community of 100,000 people and is served by convenient air, train and bus transportation. Bloomington/Normal is also home to the corporate headquarters of State Farm Insurance Company, four institutions of higher learning, two hospitals, and lots of shopping, restaurants, and indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
