      What Is Special?

The large and beautiful non-metropolitan campus with the mid-south climate is within minutes of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, and the spectacular 270,000 acre (109,350 hectare) Shawnee National Forest. Removed sufficiently from urban tensions so that you can concentrate on your studies, but served sufficiently by highway, rail, bus, and air that you can easily visit several different metropolitan areas.

From a secluded Japanese garden to the beach at your own Lake-on-Campus… From a host of faculty and staff who care about each international student to some of the most respected academic programs in the world…Southern Illinois University Carbondale, can be your domain of delightful surprises. Founded in 1869, SIUC has evolved into one of the major research universities in the United States, while maintaining a focus on the student. Some of the most popular academic programs include Architectural Sciences, Aviation, Business and Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, and Mass Communication and Media Arts.

The large campus contains 256 buildings. Facilities vary in style, size, and purpose, from a circular 10,000-seat arena (home of the NCAA Division I Basketball Salukis) to an eight-sided multimedia instruction center, 17-story high-rise residence halls, and a permanent beach house on the 40-acre spring-fed campus lake. Morris Library is one of the largest open stack libraries in the nation and students have access to approximately 1700 public student computers through open and dedicated labs located conveniently throughout the campus, including housing. Two of the buildings most appreciated by students are the Student Center (nearly 3.24 hectares under roof) offering several restaurants, bowling, billiards, bookstore, study lounges, and home to many student organizations and the Student Recreation Center, with its Olympic sized swimming pool, weight rooms, camping base site, climbing wall, indoor track, martial arts and modern dance facilities, and intramural facilities for racquet ball, soccer, basketball, and volleyball.
