    Financial Support: International students must show a certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student's first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.

    TOEFL scores and ESL Programs (English as a Second Language)

    TOEFL Requirements


    For Undergraduate and Accelerated Bachelor's Degree Completion Programs (for adults): Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 533 (paper-based), 200 (computer-based), 72-73 (internet-based) for undergraduate studies; or completion of level 112 at ELS Language Centers and a qualified recommendation of the program director of the chosen language program; or a Michigan test score of at least 85; or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 7; or a King George International College (KGIC) English for Post-Secondary Education (EPE) final proficiency test score of 75% with a passing class score of 80.


    For Master's Programs: A score of at least 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 60 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language Center and a qualified recommendation of the program director of the chosen language program; or a Michigan test score of 85; or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 5.5-6.0; a King George International College (KGIC) English for Post-Secondary Education (EPE) final proficiency test score of 75% with a passing class score of 80; or a Pearson Test of English score of at least 61.


    For MBA Programs: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 72 (internet) for graduate studies on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.) 


    For Doctoral Programs: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 60 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided.


    Prior Degrees in the US: International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.



    Other Testing Requirements


    For Master's Programs: Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.


    For MBA Programs: None


    For Doctoral Programs: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).


    Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test.
